Member Feature: Thomas Johnstone Wins Scottish Building Contractor of the Year Award 2023
Thomas Johnstone Ltd (TJL) is celebrating after winning the Scottish Building Contractor of the Year Award at a prestigious ceremony in London on Thursday 20 April 2023.
The Renfrewshire-based specialist fit-out contractor won the honour at the Construction Awards of Excellence which reward the best companies in the UK construction industry.
The award was sponsored by the Scottish Building Federation and was presented by SBF President Greig MacLeod (MacLeod Construction). TJL’s Development Director Alison Kilgour and Regional Commercial Director Kevin Pick collected the prize with the Company shortlisted in the Scottish Building Contractor category alongside fellow SBF Members Alfred Flett Ltd, Orkney Builders (Contractors) Ltd and Scott & Brown (Builders) Ltd who were all represented on the evening.

Celebrating its 155th anniversary this year, TJL was founded in Glasgow in 1868 and has grown into a £70 million+ business. The contractor won the award based on its reputation for ‘delivering excellence and providing exceptional quality’ as main contractors on projects, including the recently completed construction and fit-out of the Virgin Hotel, Edinburgh.
The brand’s first hotel to open outside of the USA, the Virgin Hotel Edinburgh project involved the refurbishment of a mix of listed buildings on a tight site within the UNESCO Edinburgh Old and New Towns World Heritage Site. As well as restoration and refurbishment, the project included constructing a new build wing occupying a tight position that maximised the site location.
